Southend had a chance to double their lead when Cardwell had a 12-yard shot saved by Duncan. Scunthorpe’s Colclough hit the post from six yards, and later Kendall was through on goal but his shot bounced off the inside of the right post. With a minute of normal time remaining, Colclough curled an effort over the crossbar, but a second goal was unnecessary as Southend held on for the win.
