Scunthorpe United and Chester played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Glanford Park, with a new National League North attendance record of 7,511 fans in attendance. The match saw Scunthorpe's Jacob Butterfield score a late equaliser to deny Chester all three points. The two former Football League clubs had not played each other in almost 20 years, but the meeting of second-placed Scunthorpe and fourth-placed Chester captured the public's imagination. The attendance beat the previous best of 6,311 when Stockport County hosted Spennymoor on their way to promotion in 2019. Scunthorpe's Ben Tollitt opened the scoring, before Liam McAlinden levelled with a header. George Glendon then put Chester back in front, but McAlinden's sending off and a mass brawl did not deter Scunthorpe from pushing for an equaliser. And it was Butterfield who scored the decisive goal, securing a point for Scunthorpe. The draw did neither side any favours, allowing leaders Tamworth to extend their advantage over Scunthorpe to 12 points. Scunthorpe now face successive away trips to Darlington and Bishop's Stortford, while Chester's next two games are at home before the trip to leaders Tamworth on Saturday week. Scunthorpe's recent history has been marked by relegation, having dropped out of the Football League in 2022 and then down another level last May. Chester City, on the other hand, were relegated from the Football League in 2009 and reformed as Chester FC in 2010. The two clubs are now battling it out in the National League North, with Scunthorpe aiming to make their way back up the English football league ladder.
